The Story

A vessel steeped in tradition and filled to the brim with human connection.

First dreamed up in collaboration with our friends at Diaspora Co., The Kulhad was inspired by the handleless clay cups that have been used for centuries in the Indian subcontinent—simple vessels made to hold a few warm gulps of chai before being tossed, broken and remade.

Sana Javeri Kadri, founder of Diaspora Co., shared photos of traditional kulhads from potters near Indian railways, where they’re still thrown “off the hump” and fired by the thousands. Using those images, our team started prototyping by hand on the wheel, refining the shape until we landed on a version that felt just right. That first factory-made run was small, and the original Kulhad came glazed in Rococo back in 2022.

We now make The Kulhad in limited quantities in our seasonal glazes. And in 2025, 5% of all Kulhad sales will go to Vrutti, an organization working to build more resilient rural livelihoods across India.

Why we love it:

  • A limited East Fork form, originally made in special collaboration with Diaspora Co.
  • 5% of The Kulhad sales in 2025 will go to Vrutti, an organization that works to tackle poverty and marginalisation
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe

Details & Care:

  • Dimensions: 3.125” x 3.5”
  • Holds: 8 oz to the brim
  • Material: 100% Lead Free Stoneware
  • Our pottery is made by humans and reduction-fired in Asheville, North Carolina. Any differences in glaze applications and surfaces are there to embrace.
  • Dishwasher and microwave safe
  • Avoid open flames or preheated ovens. Our pots are oven safe up to 350° but must start in a cool oven and be brought up to heat gradually (think crème brĂ»lĂ©e).
  • Over time, your pots might accumulate mild cutlery marks. These can be buffed off with warm water and scouring powder such as Bar Keeper's Friend.
